Dear Staff and Students
The University has met its enrolment targets for 2020, and for this reason, the University’s Leadership has resolved that no further academic registrations for 2020 will be processed for undergraduate, Honours and Postgraduate Diplomas and Coursework Masters study during 2020. This further implies that no applications for undergraduate, Honours and Postgraduate Diploma, and Coursework Masters admission will be accepted for the second semester of 2020.
A process for consideration of postgraduate registration in 2020 (Research Masters and Doctoral qualifications) has been established, and information in this regard circulated to Colleges and Schools.
CENTRAL APPLICATIONS OFFICE (CAO)
Application via the CAO for 2021 is open and ongoing, and applications for 2021 are being accepted, with early provisional offers being made to qualifying applicants. Early provisional offers will be made on Grade 11 results, as the Basic Education sector has not yet confirmed the status of the 2020 June and/or Trial examinations.
Pupils in their Grade 12 year are encourage to apply via the CAO (www.cao.ac.za). Please note that applications for the 2021 MBCHB programme close on the 30th of June 2020, while applications for all other 2021 undergraduate programmes close on the 30th of September 2020.
As at 15 May 2020, UKZN had already received just over 10 000 applications for study in 2021.
Past Matric applicants with a South African Matric/NSC should also apply via the CAO.
APPLICATIONS ACCEPTED VIA THE UKZN APPLICATION PORTAL, WHICH WILL OPEN ON 1 JUNE 2020 (www.ukzn.ac.za/)
South African applicants with an International Matric/School leaving certificate should apply via www.ukzn.ac.za/. The same application closing dates apply as for CAO applications (30 June for MBCHB, and 30 September for all other programmes).
Application from International applicants (that is all applicants outside of the South African borders) should apply via www.ukzn.ac.za/ noting that the Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine is governed by a SADC agreement to accept applicants from countries without a medical school, for example, Lesotho. Such applications are channelled via their respective Ministries.
Postgraduate Applicants for 2021 are encouraged to apply via www.ukzn.ac.za/ noting the different closing dates in the Postgraduate Prospectus.
COVID-19 brings with it a number of unknowns currently, and the University wishes to advise, that while applications are encouraged and are being accepted, the start date for the 2021 academic year can currently not be confirmed. With time, we will be better placed to advise the University community and our external stakeholders.
UKZN currently has every intention of completing the 2020 academic year, acknowledging that such completion might only occur early in 2021.
